Asmara is a city of contrasts. Containing one of the highest concentrations of intact Modernist architecture across the globe, it remains largely unchanged since its Italian colonisers left in 1941. Yet this incongruous architectural marvel owes its appearance to the rampant invasion of the Italian powers, and Mussolini’s ambition to create the ‘Second Roman Empire’.
